Cleaning Pet Turf: Protect Against Salmonella with ProVetLogic
Many veterinarians and clinics have increasing concerns about salmonella outbreaks. This is largely due to the increase in feeding of raw diets. The organic waste that is left behind after feeding needs to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, but this can be difficult on some common surfaces like synthetic pet turf.
Cleaning pet turf can pose a unique challenge because the EPA has not approved any disinfectant(s) for use specifically on the synthetic pet turf that is commonly found in doggy daycares and kennels. The EPA has not determined if pet turf should be considered carpet or a hard surface. A disinfectant must bond to the surface for a specified period for it to be fully effective.
Here is the Recommended Protocol for Cleaning Pet Turf & Hard Surfaces with ProVetLogic’s Kennel & Turf Disinfectant:
- Remove animals from the area.
- Remove all food and water dishes, toys, etc. (isolate until they can be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized).
- Pick up and discard solid waste.
- Use a foam gun applicator or pump-up sprayer to apply Kennel & Turf Care at a rate of 2 to 4-ounces per gallon of water. The use of Kennel & Turf Care will degrade any remaining organic matter (“THE HOST”).
- Agitate the surface if needed, using a synthetic brush and handle.
- Allow the solution to sit for 3 to 5 minutes (no more).
- Rinse and allow the surface to dry as thoroughly as possible, before returning animals to the area.
For surfaces that can be disinfected:
- Preclean the surface with Kennel & Turf Care.
- Using a pump-up sprayer, mix a solution of 1-ounce Animal Facility Disinfectant per gallon of water.
- Starting from the back of the area and walking towards the entrance (do not walk back over the treated area) apply the solution to all animal and human touchpoints (floors, walls, gates, handles, etc.).
- DO NOT RINSE! Allow the surface to dry before returning animals to the area.
*Clean and sanitize pet dishes, toys, etc. before returning them to the area.
